Common Pediatric Conditions That Tend to Respond Well to Chiropractic Care

• Colic
• Reflux
• Nursing difficulties (poor latch, side preference, weak suckling)
• Head or face asymmetry, flattened head
• Movement imbalances
• Fussiness
• Sensory integration
• Constipation
• Heightened sensitivity
• Frequent infections
• Asthma
• Otitis media (ear infections)
• Torticollis (constant head turn to one side)
• Hyperactivity / Inattentiveness (ADHD/ADD)
• “Growing pains” (usually night pains in the legs, often due to pelvic misalignment)

Although we are largely trained to only seek care when there is a “problem”, there are extraordinary benefits to preventative medicine, for both our children and ourselves. The spine and skull are the most vital protective network of bones encasing the brain the the spinal cord… the king and queen of the nervous system.

These fortresses are made of many many working parts:
To protect the brain, there are 8 bones (actually cartilage in the infant) that comprise the cranium, and 14 more to cover the face- these are constantly expanding and realigning to adapt to the extremely rapid growth of the brain during the first 3 years of life –the brain grows 2-3 times its birth size in just the first year of life!

And surrounding the spinal cord are 23 vertebrae, with working joints at every level, collectively known as the spine. This, too, undergoes extraordinary shifting as the infant body grows and the three spinal curves form– being complete once the child is walking.

By the age of 6, all of the motor and sensory functions that we use as adults have been fully developed. Damage at any stage prior to the preliminary development of these functions will cause compensatory patterns to allow us to interact with our world to the best of our ability. Without intervention, we will likely live with that headache, or allergy, poor eyesight, learning challenge, lack of coordination, postural problems, sleep disorders and so on and so on- for the rest of our lives.

Every child should be checked for spinal and cranial misalignments within two months after birth (immediately if there are specific concerns), and monitored intermittently throughout the wild years of adolescence. Little bodies only require the slightest gentle touch in the right direction to resolve what could become chronic issues if left to “harden”.
